Yes you simply read the story, and analyze the plot line. You then keep a very similar plot line and change different aspects of the story. You can change character names, animals, setting, time, gender of characters, etc.
That could be possible if you have a wide imagination. Reading lots of fantasy books could help too. Try to think outside the box; and about things no one really thought of before and just have fun inventing thoughts and ideas! :)
