The group known as the irreconcilables consisted of several Republicans and Democrats in Congress, with the leader of this group being Henry Cabot Lodge. This group was strongly against passing the Treaty of Versailles because this treaty would allow the newly formed League of Nations to make war without the approval of the US Congress. Essentially, if the US joined the League of Nations, Congress no longer had the power to declare war. This scared several US Congressmen, as they felt the US would be dragged into overseas wars that they had no business getting involved in.

The United States Senate, known as the "irreconcilables," refused to approve the Versailles peace treaty as they were  not in favor of Wilson’s League of Nation as they believed that  the best way to maintain peace in United states is through staying out of the European affairs.

Further Explanations:

League of Nation was a secretarial organization established to withstand world peace introduced by Thomas Woodrow Wilson after WWI.  He was the one who prepared for the institution of League of Nation and for that he was   also bestowed with Nobel Prize for his end of hostilities attempt. The idea for the formulation of League of Nation was laid during the ratification of the “Treaty of Versailles”. Though it was a peace treaty but was strongly opposed by the democratic faction group in congress.

This group of irreconcilables was led by Henry Cabot Lodge. The group opposed the peace treaty of Versailles only because of the clause of League of Nations. According to them the best way to maintain peace in the nation is through keeping a distance from European affairs. The nation was in no state of funding another war.
