The Mayflower Compact is a pact signed by British settlers on November 11, 1620, before their arrival in present-day Massachusetts. To stay united and move in the same direction, they decided to write a document during their crossing of the Atlantic, called the Mayflower Compact.
In this document, 41 people agreed on a democratic political system to be applied when they arrived on their new land. The main idea was to listen to the majority's opinion before enacting a law. These settlers desired to guarantee religious freedom as well, which did not exist in their country of origin. The Mayflower Compact was not a total break with the King of England whom these adventurers respected a lot. It was the first step towards a complete democracy, which was officially established by the first constitution of the United States, more than 150 years later.
